And no, I'm not. I guess it could've been something mechanical, too.

All I know is that it had a strange. . . cylinder? On its back that was glowing with a ring of blue lights. When the cylinder sunk back into the shadow, the entire thing lit up with blue lights patterned like veins.

Hmmm, OK. What was it... doing? Like you guys just saw this thing over the side of the ferry randomly????

Sooooort of? It was just kind of hovering there for a bit, but when the cylinder sunk into the water, the ferry engine started up again.

So I think it's what helped us get to shore. For a loose definition of "shore."

[since they were still like 30 feet off]
