This is an interest check for any current players that are interested in joining the IN THE NIGHT mod team in any capacity. Comments to this post are screened.

As we mentioned in our recent mod announcement, we don't yet know which exact positions we need filled, and this interest check is meant to help us get a feeler for who's available and willing to step up. This is not an application! We do plan to open mod applications to the game at large once we firm up our needs; that process will be a lot more official and informative, we promise.

For now, we're likely looking for 1-2 "helper mods" to assist us with the day to day tasks that keep the game running. Helper mods assist with a bunch of stuff that we'll list below, but they don't handle plot stuff or player issues. Danielle and I will continue to handle that sort of overhead stuff.

Helper mods assist with the following:
  • reading apps
  • processing AC
  • processing item requests, player plots/projects, deaths, hiatuses/drops, etc.
  • updating the game history page
  • maintaining the game pages and lists
  • writing the weekly bulletin
  • writing TDM/event prompts
  • running explorations (with instruction/supervision)
  • playing minor NPCs such as forest spirits and Night Market vendors (all mods have an open invitation to play an NPC at the Night Market)
  • modding the discord server
  • pretty much anything we need help with!

To be clear, we're not necessarily looking for one person to take over all of these duties. These are just the type of duties we're looking for help with. Typically, some of these duties are either permanently assigned to one mod (the AC mod does all the AC stuff) or assigned as-needed (explorations and event prompts).

We're also open to taking on "bonus mods" (we'll come up with a better name, we swear) that would only be responsible for one or two regularly occurring duties, such as processing AC, reading apps, or updating the game history page. A "bonus mod" would be responsible for the 1-2 duties they take on without needing to be available for as-needed assignments.

The summary here is that our mod positions are flexible and you will be able to set your own "schedule". This is a volunteer position for a fun hobby, not a job, and while we of course expect our mods to take the position seriously, what you're willing to contribute is up to you.

Finally, here's a short list of the requirements we do have for mods joining our team:
  • Communication skills are the most important part of being a mod! You'll need to communicate clearly and efficiently with your fellow mods, as well as with the playerbase!

  • Attention to detail is also real important to us. Mods need to be able to follow instructions without direct supervision. Helper mod duties will typically require them to either follow an existing format to keep the game/our mod voice consistent, or to follow a set of instructions doled out by either Mippins or Danielle to create prompts or exploration responses. We delegate a lot, and both communication skills and attention to detail are important in ensuring that delegation runs smoothly for the whole team.

  • You'll need to join the game's discord server if you're not in it already, as that's where all of our mod magic happens. You won't be required to engage in the game chat at large, but we do need you in there to be part of the mod channels.

  • Familiarity with google docs/sheets and basic html is required, though we don't mind a bit of teaching. We use a lot of google sheets to keep track of stuff behind the scenes, so that's the big thing! As far as html goes, we have templates for big stuff like all our game pages with fancy formatting, so we're just looking for confidence in navigating those templates and creating small bits of html (lists and stuff, we're not terribly fancy) as needed. It's more important that you're able to understand and navigate html than to generate it yourself.

  • Please keep in mind that the game runs on EST time and both Mippins and Danielle are in US timezones. You don't need to be in a US timezone to mod with us, but be prepared to be flexible if you're in a timezone that doesn't align neatly with the game's schedule. Our timed updates (AC, apps, stuff like that) all happens at midnight EST, while other scheduled posts (event posts, the tdm, etc.) typically go up around 6pm EST. Mippins and Danielle do most modwork in that 6pm-midnight window.

If you have any questions about modding or about how our team already functions, feel free to ask below! We're happy to go into more detail about any of this so that you know what you're getting yourself into before formal applications open up. All comments are screened, but we'll strategically unscreen our responses to questions so that y'all can ask anonymously but everyone still has access to the same info. If you ask something that's specific to your circumstances, we'll keep that reply screened.

Please let us know below if you're at all interested in joining our team! As a reminder, this is just an interest check. Right now, we're only curious as to who's interested in helping out and what they can help out with. There's no form to fill out (that'll come with official applications later), so just go ahead and comment with whatever info you feel is most relevant at this time! And thanks so much for throwing your hat into the ring. We appreciate you very much!
